That saga could finally be about to be put to bed. West Ham are very close to smashing their transfer record to sign Felipe Anderson for a fee of nearly £40million.
Sources in Italy believe that a deal for the Lazio winger to move to the London Stadium is on the cusp of being completed in the next 48 hours after the Hammers increased their offer.
It is expected that West Ham and Lazio will eventually thrash out terms that will see Anderson sign for a club-record fee of £38m.
The source in Italy added that West Ham are 'going for it' and 'refusing to take a step back' in negotiations over the deal.
West Ham's current record signing is Marko Arnautovic, who joined the club last summer in a deal worth up to £25m.
The 25-year-old is understood to be keen to play under Manuel Pellegrini, who was appointed West Ham manager in the summer.
Anderson has heavily impressed in recent seasons and was eyed by both Manchester United and Chelsea due to his performances in Serie A.
Last season, he scored four goals and provided seven assists during his 21 appearances in the league.
He also scored three goals in the Europa League for Lazio.
The Brazilian would become West Ham's fourth signing since Pellegrini was appointed as manager.

Work permits required for two deals
Andriy Yarmolenko and Fabian Balbuena will both require work permits to play for West Ham.
A deal for Dortmund winger Yarmolenko appears to be getting closer with his club confirming they are in advanced talks with another club for his sale and have given him permission to speak to that same club. The Ukrainian international fulfils the criteria for an automatic work permit having played over 75% of internationals in the past 24 months. Ukraine are ranked 35th in FIFA world rankings and the FA scheme requires a ranking of 50 or under.
Fabián Balbuena from Brazilian side Corinthians also requires a work permit as he is a Paraguayan by birth.
Paraguay has a FIFA world ranking of 32 but Balbuena has not played 75% of all International matches so it would have to go to FA appeal panel the grounds of exceptional talent.
Jean Michaël Seri is another player who could require a work permit should the Hammers sign him. The Ivory Coast international has made 16 appearances for his country since 2015. Ivory Coast has a world ranking of 68 so fall outside the automatic FA work permit criteria.

Arsenal are facing a battle with Everton and West Ham to snap up French midfielder Steven N'Zonzi.
Reports this week claimed the Gunners have opened talks with Sevilla over a deal for the powerful international - currently in Russia with Didier Deschamp's side.
However, according to French outlet Le10 Sport , West Ham and Everton are also desperate to sign the former Stoke ace.
Now Premier League sides are yet to table a formal bid for N’Zonzi due to his involvement in Russia.
N’Zonzi played under new Arsenal boss Unai Emery during his time at Sevilla - and that could swing him to the Emirates.

West Ham United make approach for Argentine playmaker, confident of getting deal done
According to a claim in the Italian media, West Ham United are taking an interest in Sevilla attacker Franco Vazquez.
The Argentine playmaker joined the Spanish club from Palermo a couple of seasons ago, but West Ham are presented as confident they could get a deal done for the player.
TMW report West Ham have already made contact about Vazquez, but it’s not reported whether this is with his agent or his club. It’s claimed the Hammers believe they can get a deal done for the South American in this transfer window as the club look to bring in reinforcements.
With Manuel Lanzini sidelined with a serious knee injury for the foreseeable future, Vazquez would be seen as a like for like replacement for his compatriot.
Vazquez is contracted to Sevilla until June 2021.
